It produces many hormones, the two most important are called called triiodothyronine and thyroxine. Its easier to call them by their shortened names, T3 and T4. These hormones act all over the body, including in cardiac function and metabolism. Yes, humans also have a thyroid gland and they, too, can get HYPO (underactive) or HYPER (overactive)-thyroidism. For whatever reason, dogs only get naturally occurring HYPOthyroid and cats will only get naturally occurring HYPERthyroidism. You will note, I said naturally occurring.
