The enigmatic Bill Nelson was born on this day in 1948. I was first introduced to Bill when in the band Be Bop Deluxe, they had a UK top 20 hit with “Ships In The Night”. Bill is a supreme multi-instrumentalist and prolific recorder of over 60 albums!! He records under several guises namely, Orchestra Arcana, Channel Light Vessell (with Mick Karn and Jill St John), The Lighthouse Signal Mechanism Orchestra, Nelsonica Convention and of course Bill Nelson. Bill’s music couldn’t be more fascinating and varied, venturing from guitar driven pop to ambient music. After Be Bop Deluxe folded in 1978 he moved to a new wavey guitar project called Bill Nelson’s Red Noise and released the essential and defining Sound On Sound. From the 80’s he concentrated mostly as a solo musician and received critical acclaim for his experimental synth-pop releases, namely the single Do You Dream In Colour? and marvellous albums Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam and The Love That Whirls (Diary Of A Thinking Heart). Continuous recording through 80s saw Bill become increasingly esoteric. He delved into found sounds, samples and music based around his personal interest of the occult and Gnostic beliefs. Soundtracks and voluminous ambient albums are the norm while still releasing the arty sound he so well known for. Some of his output is not immediately “accessible” but he has something for everyone in his catalogue of a staggering amount of music. https://youtube/watch?v=KwRZ0HW9-aw
