The fall of 1970 was also autumn for the Delaware and Hudsons venerable overnight train, the Montreal Limited, linking the Quebec metropolis with New York City. Early on an October morning that year, the northbound Limited, D&H train No. 9, called at Whitehall, N.Y. Behind Alco PA No. 18 was a D&H (former Rio Grande) baggage car, a grove series Canadian Pacific 10 roomette/5 double bedroom sleeper, a Penn Central (former New York Central) stream series 6 double bedroom/buffet lounge, and two D&H (former Rio Grande) 52 seat coaches. The train was running on time, arriving at Whitehall at 4:07 and departing at 4:13 a.m. The following May 1, all D&H passenger service ended with the start-up of Amtrak, though daytime service was restored over the route in August 1974, a service that is still in effect. But the Montreal Limiteds overnight schedule has never been revived.
