The following is an interview with my mentor--PRINCE LASHA who taught me more about playing music, reading, improvising, and, more importantly, listening than I could have learned in any music school. Baptism by fire--"WOOD SHEDDING", hours of playing with PRINCE switching from the Baritone sax to the tenor, to the alto sax to the flute, Soprano, clarinet to the English horn. We would often play for hours, starting at 5:00 pm and playing until 5:00 am. We would sometimes take a drive to SAN FRANCISCO going out to OCEAN BEACH to listen to the WIND, and then going back to his place or mine to play some more. I would look up and there would be the SUN RISING. I would drive home, go for a 2 mile run and go to work and not even be tired. One of the greatest treats was to see PRINCE play with a group called MINGUS AMONGST US in SAN FRANCISCO at a place called the ELBO ROOM—playing two SOPRANO saxes at the same time with different melodies emanating for each one.
