The graupel, say it with a thick German accent...[gʁaʊpɛl]; English /ˈɡraʊpəl/ that fell across Acadiana earlier today also known in a more updated mall lexicon as dipping dots...started its day as snow, then fell through an above freezing layer aloft and started to melt, but before completely melting they refroze in a layer between 1000-2000ft with the small ice layer encapsulating the tiny remnant snowflakel Thats why they were light and bouncy too...also known as soft hail or ice pellets.
