The long view on a day that elates some, depresses others; a day that will pass, but some things endure. Why did Edmond Burke (1796) say: “Manners are of more importance than laws.” He provided his own answer: It is because “Upon them, in a great measure, the laws depend.” Manners and laws have their common origin in human social interactions. Out of that crucible the rules we live by emerge by consent. There are two universal elementary human rules of ancient origin that underlie manners applied to table, road traffic and society: First-come-first-serve, and turn-taking. You can think of your own host of examples of how these two elementary forms of conflict-resolution and order apply to table and traffic etiquette. They also are at the foundation of property (once called propriety) rights: First possession and occupation rules. Gradually they helped create the institutions that we live and thrive by.
