The most important step of all is to get big money out of politics, and Im glad to report to you some small progress -- but your help is needed. The Government by the People Act (HR 20), and a similar Senate bill, the Fair Elections Now Act, soon to be introduced by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), would would provide a $25 income tax credit to people who make small donations to congressional and Senate candidates. And for every dollar candidates receive in gifts of $150 or less, they would get $6 from a special public fund. (This would, for example, turn a $50 gift into $350, and $150 into $1,050.) These bills would thereby amplify the voices of the millions of Americans who can’t afford to make six- and seven-figure political donations, and allow candidates of modest means to compete with entrenched incumbents backed by big-spending lobbyists and special interests. Its an uphill fight, of course, but dozens of senators and House members have already signed on to these bills as co-sponsors. Please write or phone your senator and House member, asking that he or she sign on as well.
