The murder of Siti Sofea Emelda almost a week ago has brought up a chilling side to Kuala Lumpur. Homelessness amongst the Citys population has been thrown into the spotlight. This is not a new phenomena as homelessness around the Central Market area and Chow Kit has been going around since the late 90s. I used to live in Bukit Tunku and I can recollect a number of abandoned houses being used by homeless persons either for drug purposes or just a makeshift home. A Minister had recently said that it was the generosity of the general public that bred homelessness. Im not going to judge her on a comment as she is entitled to her view. In my humble opinion, homelessness derives from a variety of issues ranging from higher cost of living in the cities, drug abuse, broken families etc etc. Various organisations have been set up to counter this but yet it seems futile as the ills of the urban jungle seems to sweep them back in. Some may be saved but a majority return to the streets swallowed by the concrete jungle.
