The news today says Benjamin Adekunle, the Black Scorpion, has died 2 years to his 80th birthday. This is what history sums up on this Number One Nigerian Military enigma (yeah, No. 1, for there is yet to exist another with his reputation): 1. He was given command of the 3rd Infantry Division 2. He had his own idea of what an efficient fighting machine should be 3. The command position was all he needed from nature (chance, luck, god, God, godfathers) 4. From the moment of his assuming command, he took control, redefined the engagement strategy and even changed the name of the division to psycho-boost the morale of his men. 5. He modeled the 3rd Div into the Dreaded 3rd Marine Commando. From that moment onward, men of the 3rd Marine Commando operated literally as Gods of War. They dominated their theater of engagement and became the scourge of any challenger. 6. History says he led assault himself (solders, officers, historians, please help confirm) - rumours had it that officers and men that didnt move with the Black Scorpion risked summary field court marshal and death 7. His 3rd Marine Commando changed the tide of the war and reports had it that the enemy camp subsequently had rapid dialogue with their feet rather than engage the Black Scorpions men There were many who fought during the war, but none came to represent the war like Benjamin Adekunle did. RIP - The Maja. ALL my atotonu is to teach 2 lessons: 1. You only need a command post, nobody would do the job for you. 2. Your command position is an opportunity to change history (this applies if you are a commander leading men to fight Boko Haram, a governor leading a state, a commissioner, a Minister leading some critical sector etc). You can change the History of the Black man.
