The old Richardsons Tannery Site looking from Osmaston Park Road. I remember the stench from the tannery wafting over Sinfin, especially during the summer months. That combined with the odour of aviation fuel from the Rolls-Royce test beds and the sweet scents of chemicals drifting in from Hampshires (Reckitts) made Sinfin quite a pungent place. The Richardson family played a fair part in the history of Derby and writer Maxwell Craven has written two books on the family. Before it became a tannery, the site was a brickworks from which the bricks that built Normanton Barracks were made in the late 1800s. The site will soon be the incinerator that nobody wants.
