The origins of the Super Nawettan 24/11/2014 This first Super Nawettan tournament was staged in 1988 just after the Gambia national team, the Scorpions, were disbanded after a dismal performance in that years Zone 2 tournament in Bissau. “There was total dejection and disappointment and a gap in football activities that was gradually waning peoples interest in football. It was then that the Super Nawettan was conventionalised to be competed among the cup winners of nawettans in zones of Banjul, Bakau, Brikama, Serekunda and others, said Kebba Yorro Manneh, a former GFA secretary general who as chairman of the Youth Leaders was part that first Super Nawettan orgainsing body headed by Ebou Joof. According to Manneh, the tournament was changed to the present format featuring zones and not clubs in 1991. “I was then GFA secretary general and George Gomez who as my assistant was made president after Ousman Sillah resigned. It was during Georges presidency and of course his innovation that led to the birth of the present zonal format of the Super Nawettan where zones compete among themselves,” he said.
