The production and sale of synthetic lace panties was banned in Russia on July 1st, government minister Valery Koreshkov told reporters in Moscow, if they do not reach a six percent threshold for moisture absorption. Most synthetic materials used for lace panties have a moisture absorption of only 3% which can cause chafing and vaginal inflammation. This ban has been introduced to protect consumers from potentially harmful products, and is not an infringement on personal liberty. There has been outrage throughout Russia at the ban, with groups of young women being arrested by police after protesting by wearing panties on their heads. This law is an impermissible invasion into our private lives, complained dermatologist Darya Baskova, and reminds us of the days of un-erotic and unfashionable Soviet undergarments. The story of Russian underwear is the story of how peoples lives have been abased for the sake of state politics. But obstetrics professor Yelena Uvarova was more understanding, commenting that in synthetic undergarments, nothing can breathe. It is like wearing a cellophane bag. But the government should seek to educate on this matter, not prohibit. Ideally each person should make this decision for herself. Meanwhile State Duma deputy Oleg Mikheyev is now calling for bans on: Canvas sneakers, Loafers, Ballet flats, Moccasins without heels, and Stilettos, arguing that these also cause health problems.
