The protest against the fee hike at the Punjab University took the worst turn today with the police beating the students brutally. The protest was going on peacefully for last 23 days, and Raminder Singh of the SFS was on indefinite hunger strike for last 6 days. In the morning, when the vice-chancellor came, the students tried to talk to him about the issue of the fee-hike. However, the vice-chancellor remained mum on the issue, ignoring all the demands of the students. After that a large number of police personnel were called and they brutally lathicharged the students. Most of the students of SFS were arrested by the police and were taken to the sector 11 police station. The height of this brutality was that the girl students were pushed and caned along with the students and the persons who were normally crossing the road. It was SHO Malkiat Singh who crossed all the limits, brutally beating the students and forcefully putting them in the police vans. After the incident the students tried to meet the DSW to immediately release the students. However the indifferent attitude of the university authorities was proved with the DSW and the other authorities not even responding to the whole issue. The arrested students were beaten heavily in the police station, and are kept in the lock-up without any medical checkup as the law states. The arrested students are Daman, Arish (president of the SFS), Sachinderpal Pali, Sahil, Gurpreet and Dharminder Singh. Ironically, some of the police personnel were taken for the medical checkup but the students were treated badly, with the police filing a wrong allegation of eve teasing and molestation against the students even when the students were sitting peacefully on the dharna. Now the police, instead of taking any action are putting wrong allegations against the students. In the medical tests, the student sitting on indefinite hunger strike has been declared medically fit. He was taken to the police station first rather than taking for the medical tests. The height of the brutality is this that the whole police was deployed to remove the same student from the dharna place by saying that he was not medically fit and that he needs to be hospitalized
