The ranks of women veterans are growing, but they face many barriers to getting the medical care they need. That’s the conclusion of a study just released in advance of Veterans Day by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Researchers analzyed data from several years of a national survey, looking at the risk of financial barriers to care. Overall, researchers found, there were 1.7 million working-aged veterans who needed to see a doctor in the previous year but couldn’t because of cost — 11.6 percent of this population. The percentage for women veterans was higher — 13.4 percent. Financial barriers for these women were associated with insurance coverage, physical and mental health and having children in the home. In certain years, other issues emerged, such as binge drinking in 2010.
