The reasoning behind this Producers comments on why NOT to select Denzel Washington for “The Equalizer” reminds me of the same arguments used to NOT show Michael Jackson on MTV initially back in the early 80s. Also this rationale has been used in the past as a justification for not tapping leading Black Actors for domestic released films. Many Business Managers tend to forget that from a marketing perspective the right product can make new in roads in a given market. It happens quite often. But you will never achieve this unless you try. I think The Equalizer is a classic example. Its performance should be strong enough to persuade Hollywood that at the very least they need to rethink their 20th Century myopic race assumption for the 21st Century. This is also the reason why any global business needs to be diversified within its management not as a cosmetic and esthetically pleasing image but as a matter of business survival. Several years ago a Fortune magazine survey revealed that companies that more actively pursued affirmative action tended to be more profitable than those that didn’t. In-house familiarity with new markets, especially on an international level, is a key factor. As critical as some of us may be of Obama, dont underestimate the cultural impact he has had world-wide in forcing people to rethink many racist assumptions about Blacks. Particularly among the young. We tend to forget there is a world out there beyond the domestic echo chambers of negativity. I’m not saying the World is reaching a racial utopia. Far from it. But let’s not ignore the impact of unprecedented images of a Black First family either. Ive studied, used, and taught business analysis methods in finance, marketing and operations for 30 years. Too often Ive seen forecasts and decisions based solely on historic data with no allowance for a changing environment as well as product innovation. Im sure Hollywood is not an exception to this vulnerability in American Business practices.
