The solution is so simple, really. Let go of the idea of a "Jewish" state and replace it with a state for all its people, including all the Palestinian refugees who wish to return (this is a basic requirement of international law). A place where Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and any other religious tradition or none at all are equally protected. Such a state would engender no hostility from its neighbors and thus all the claims of massive military force needed as a defense would be moot.
