The summer before, Danny had gone out on the Big Lake alone. With Boz’s permission, he’d taken the barkeep’s old 16-foot Sea Ray boat out for a spin. Boz hadn’t thought Danny would venture outside the bay, not on his own. The storm thundered in from the northwest after dumping three inches of rain and hail on Waukegan, Illinois, gathering speed as it raced down the lake. When it roared into Bleake Harbor, Boz ran outside to see hailstones jumping on his dock like popcorn. The bay had disappeared into an oatmeal cloud. If his boat had been twenty yards from the beach, he couldn’t have seen it. The Coast Guard located Danny and the front half of the Sea Ray on a sand bar a few hundred yards off Long Beach. Danny was sitting placidly on the bow, legs straddling the port and starboard lights, rocking with the boat’s remains in the batter of the waves. “Isn’t it awesome?” Danny said as the Coast Guard seaman hauled him into the cutter. After that, Carey decreed that Danny would not be allowed in any boat without her or Pete, and he would not be allowed on the lake for a year. Danny responded by refusing to get into any boat with his mother.
