The ‘ugly’ son Social media in China have witnessed furious reactions over the story of a Zhejiang Province native who refused to see his visiting #mother because he thought that she was “too #ugly.” According to a report on ifeng, upon learning of her granddaughter’s birth, Xu’s mother had called and requested to visit him and the baby. The following day, she traveled to his office with a basket full of food and handmade clothes as gifts for his family. Xu, however, failed to show up to work. His mother reportedly spent the entire afternoon trying to locate him. But he neither left a message nor did he respond to her calls. Only much later in the day did he respond a text sent by a local shopkeeper who had contacted him on his mother’s behalf. In the reply, he said that he was on a business trip in Xiamen. Dismayed, the mother returned home. According to the report, she says that she and her husband had worked hard to send their #son to a good university. But once he graduated, he stopped visiting the family and hardly ever called. She says that Xu asked her not to visit him too, for she was too ugly and that would mean him losing face. For a culture with a rich tradition of filial piety, the story has drawn sharp and angry reactions on Sina Weibo. “Such a bastard. (There is an old saying in Chinese) A son never thinks his mother ugly, and a dog never shuns its owner’s home however shabby it is. Where has his conscience gone? No matter what reasons he has, how could he do such things? God knows what you are doing. Today, you treat your mom like this, your child will treat you the same way in the future!” @Shown_can. “I used to blame my mother-in-law for visiting me without gifts. What a great mother this lady is. No matter what she could offer, her heart is the most important. And local foods are so good, its natural and has no pollution. Is it easy to give birth to you and raise you up? Don’t hurt your mom’s heart.” @dazhubaojiadexiaoyima. Some users, however, are offering a different version of the story. They argue that the mother was visiting in the hope for financial assistance and that Xu had shared a difficult relationship with his mother, since his parents separated when he was very young.
