Then Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. Just then the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks were split apart. And tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had died were raised. (They came out of the tombs after his resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.) Now when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said, “Truly this one was God’s Son!” Matthew 27:50-54 You read that right, tombs opened and people who were dead came out of their graves upon Jesus resurrection. Think about what that must have been like. The fabric of creation seizes as Christ releases His spirit. In this moment, you cannot deny who He is. Five things that virtually never happen, all happen in the same moment. Creation itself is crying out in response to what has taken place. At this moment, the moment where Christ says, it is finished, all hell breaks loose. The severe depth of this moment is lost on me. The impact though is timeless and life bringing. Deaths hold on us through sin is forever compromised, shattered by the power of what Jesus has done. Light has broken through the darkness and invites us to come.
