Theoretical knowledge is necessary in the initial stage of spiritual practice in order to attain practical experience. But the problem is that mere theoretical knowledge, devoid of practical experience, results in fostering false pride which leads to a greater downfall than that suffered by a person who is ignorant. This pride is obvious if you observe a theoretical scholar at prayer, reading a verse from the scriptures. Every word he utters is full of conceit. But when an ignorant man prays, tvameva mata cha pita tvameva, O Lord! You alone are my Father; You alone are my Mother, the devotional feelings in his heart resound in his voice. The reason is that a simple-minded person never thinks that he knows everything, but a scholar never forgets his scholarship of the scriptures
