There are 15 photos here of the inside and out of the historic 1815-1820 Pope Golson Plantation in Pratville, Alabama it does currently stand and is on the historic register , I found one current photo of it and it is at the end and the comments as well. history POPE-GOLSON PLANTATION Prattville, Alabama The Pope-Golson Plantation was originally constructed over a period of 5 years beside the Alabama River on land that is now owned by International Paper Company. Daniel Pratt is believed to have been the architect. In 1850, following an outbreak of the “vapors” Dr. Pope had his home dismantled and the pieces numbered with Roman Numerals. They were then mounted on logs and pulled approximately 6 miles uphill by slaves and oxen. It took 2 years to reassemble the home on a 1,600 acre site which was massive undertaking The Historical Commission believes this house to have been constructed by Daniel Pratt in the period between 1815 and 1820. The War Between the States did not occur until 1865. Prior to that time, none of the Southern Antebellum homes had Green Revival columns. They were either built at a later date or added after that time. Thomas Jefferson was a visitor to the house. There is a connection that is not clear. Blood relatives, but don’t know who or how. Visitors have come by this house on their way to the Hermitage for the family reunions. He built his home in 1820, but it burned while he was President. He sent a letter (on file in the Prattville library asking for the name of the craftsman who built the staircase here and at Buena Vista. If you go the Hermitage, his staircase is identical except that it is a right hand staircase where this particular house is a left hand stair case. There are exceedingly few of these homes left and almost none with a stair case that spirals three floors. There are two large chandeliers that have not been re hung. A giant one in the foyer and a large one in the living room. They were made from 3 chandeliers that came from Jackson’s home in Mississippi. They are the old gas lights that have been converted.
