There are four things Ive found in great leaders: 1) A clear, shared vision. There should be one vision, not two, not three. Everyone in the company and partners understands and ideally believes in it. The leader effectively communicates this vision internally and externally. 2) Conviction to see it through. The leader is committed to getting the mission done to complete to achieve the vision. They stop at nearly nothing to ensure this is done, this means not wavering, changing visions, nor getting distracted. The art of focus is the art of saying no. 3) Empowerment of others to get done. While leaders should be with the team in front, they cant get the job done alone and must enable others around them to get it done. Those who cant look like micro-managers which destroy spirit, innovation, and scale. 4) Accountability of others. You cant empower others to do what they want unless the leader has set up ways for people to be accountable of self, accountability between peers, accountability from customers and accountability from management. This includes measure, feedback, reward, and unrewards for behaviors. These four arent a complete list, but this is what Ive learned in working with CEOs, market leaders, executives, and the many lessons Ive experience on my own. Please share with me your additional thoughts, what would you add to this?
