There is Somali proverb that says dhimo hadaad amaan rabtit which translates- die if you want praised. First time I heard this, I thought it doesnt make sense as dead person doesnt need praise but certainly they need to be encouraged, praised and motivated while they alive. When someone becomes ungrateful or jealous of others achievements, they do so by thinking about what another person has or seems to have or be, They then compare that with what they themselves have and they feel inadequate. Although this generalisation is not always true. Today, there are many Somalis who are doing incredible work of our community and country who deserves credit and encouragement but we chose to insult them, accuse them, brand them with names rather than supporting and encouraging them. There has been countless times I came across Somalis bad mouthing fellow Somalis and I cant help myself to ask them, have you ever met and had conversation with him/ her? and most of the time the answer is no but I heard from xyz. Therefore, we need to reevaluate ourselves and become supportive members of the community as our actions can demotivate those who are trying to do positive work for the country and community. But at the same time we need correct, advice and stop if it is necessary the bad apples. The proverb quoted above need to be removed from our mindsets and our proverb books. There is also another Somali proverb that says somalidu been way sheegan laakinse been kuma maahmahan which roughly translates- Somalis can lie but their proverbs can not be a lie. Thinking about this, make me wonder would Somalis ever be supportive and rally behind our righteous ones without preconceived motives based on clan, jealously and envy? Can also this be the reason we lack role models as we like to rock our good ones if we can not reach them?
