There is a bit of irony in these So-called literal translations (ESV, HCSB, LEB, NASB), which have thousands of footnotes that say Lit ____. Here are some examples. Genesis 3:10 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) 10 And he said, “I heard You[a] in the garden ...... [a] Lit the sound of You Genesis 3:10 Lexham English Bible (LEB) 10 And he replied,[a] “I heard the sound of you in the garden, [a] Literally “And he said”; Genesis 3:8 Lexham English Bible (LEB) 8 Then[a] they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden at the windy time of day.[b] [b] Literally “at the wind of the day” Genesis 3:8 Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze,[a] [a] Lit at the wind of the day Genesis 1:29 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the [a]surface of all the earth [a] Lit face of Genesis 4:7 English Standard Version (ESV) 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted?[a] [a] Hebrew will there not be a lifting up [of your face]? The ESV is harder to catch at avoiding the literal rendering and violating their translation philosophy because they do not generally use Lit _____ in their footnote. The ESV is the biggest sinner in this, because they expend the most energy bragging about how they are faithful to the literal translation philosophy. The NASB is the most literal of the four. The HCSB and the LEB violate even more than the ESV. However, Christian Publishing House is working on the Updated American Standard Version. It will be the most faithful English translation to the literal translation philosophy. It will avoid theological bias, because it will give you what Gods Word calls for, and what the grammar and syntax call for, even if it disagrees with peoples pet doctrines. You do not translation with theology being your focal point. You render the Word of God as what the originals said in corresponding English. If it supports a doctrinal position, fine.
