There is more to this thing we call living history than just dressing up to look like a prominent figure of the era of the War of Northern Aggression. I see pictures of folks who don a suit/uniform and strut around but they only possess the information contained in Wikipedia about their character. If one is going to portray a general or politician of that era one must strive to honor that individual by researching [in depth] his/her life and character. Replicating another living historians attire is not enough. While appearance is important it should be one of respect for the historical figure as well. Generals dressed the part, they did not give in to sloppiness for convenience sake, politicians dressed for their status, ladies dressed as ladies not dance hall girls. Long and short of it is - honor the character/impression you are portraying with knowledge and reverence.
