There was a buzz around Old Trafford last night. Unusual for a cold Wednesday night game against a team like Cardiff. Ole was back at the Theatre of Dreams and was very well received but it wasnt him. As if you didnt know it was the debut of Juan Mata that had everyone excited and rightly so. A very impressive debut indeed. The OT faithful gave him a rousing welcome when his name was read out by the announcer before the game and one which Mata reciprocated to the crowd. He went on to put in the type of performance that was impressive and inspirational, darting down the channels, pulling off the forwards to make and find space, and employing a range of passing skills. But most of all, I was impressed with his composure. If I didnt know better I would have said Mata had been a United player for at least a season. He slotted in to the team with ease and pure confidence. Welcome Juan. It has to be said the inclusion of RVP and Rooney also fed the buzz. RVP started the game and put in a performance to be proud of especially after several weeks of injury. When Van Persie was finally called off by Moyes after a great come back it smacked of the good old days at OT, with one world class talent coming off the bench for another as Rooney made a reappearance from injury. He too performed well for the rest of the game. Overall, it was a very encouraging night. Two additional things to note: Rafael was again my man of the match. The little Brazilian has developed much over the last two years and if he can erase a tendency to switch off from time to time he could be the next great United and Brazilian right back in the mould of Carlos Alberto and Cafu.....yes I dared to say it!! And finally, a word for the greatest fans in the world. As usual the OT faithful were superb. Weve had a lot of stick over the years but in this sneeze of a season weve shown our resilience, loyalty and belief....we all deserve some credit for that. As ever, the Red Ranter welcomes your comments and views.
