There was a horrible fire last night two doors down; Bobs (late) dads house is now nothing but blackened rubble. It literally went from whatever sparked it to fully engulfed in about 5 minutes. It was uninhabited, thank goodness!, and no one was hurt (to my knowledge) though there were huge chunks of flaming debris falling everywhere. Thank the stars for the metal roof that I grumble about so much - it may have saved our poor little place from catching fire with all the burning bits! Seriously. A number of people greeted me on the street during the inferno with, Are you ok? We saw the fire and thought oh no, its Melodys house! I assure you, we are super careful with candles, woodstove, etc., but it was very heart-warming to hear that people care. Guess Id lost sight of that with all the senseless, hateful bullshit that has happened in the past few months. So I thank you for reminding me. Bob is ok. Upset, I imagine, but thankful that his own house - which was in danger of burning, the fire was so fierce - is intact. After the holidays, well help him take stock of what needs to be done to finish the task the fire started - I am sure the mayor will renew his fussing at Bob to clean things up. Never offers help (as he does to select others) but thats ok. True neighbors and community will.
