“There was a recent book by Brett McCracken called Hipster Christianity: When Church and Cool Collide. McCracken observes how many churches, in their desperate attempt to become relevant, have tried to be cool. That’s a pretty tough way to go because I don’t know if you’ve noticed but cool is a moving target. The very nature of cool suggests that not everybody can be cool, and if everybody starts to be cool then cool has to move so fewer people are cool. So if you’re chasing cool you’re always going to be chasing a moving target. My spin on this is that at the heart of coolness is subversion. What coolnesss wants to do is subvert or undermine current norms. And in that sense, Jesus and Christianity are inherently cool because Jesus is deeply subversive. But he is subversive, not for the sake of subversion, but for the sake of the kingdom of God. He brings to us deeply subversive values.” – Randy Harris, Life Work, 55-56
