Theres a number of programs on TV today in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy titled What Where You Do Doing When You Heard of the Assignation of JFK. I thought it would be neat to do the same on Facebook with all my FB friends. Ill start it off, and lets see how many remember what they were doing. I was an inspiring freshman at Western Carolina University walking up the street to my dorm on ....... Hill when one of my buddies came down the hill and said that the President had just been shot. Of course I didnt believe him and thought he was teasing, but when I got to the dorm and walked into the student parlor, which back then, was the only room that TVs were permitted. This was no loss, because back then we had more important things to do than stay glued at a TV, computer, or I-phone. Sure enough, to my surprise, the parlor was packed to the hilt with astonished students with sadness and some with tears in their eyes, and I thought to myself that my friend was not kidding afterall. It was though everyone was in a trance. I can honestly say, and Im sure it was because I really didnt understand the differences between political parties back then despite the fact I was a History/Political Science aspiring student, that I was, like so many Americans, mesmerized by Kennedy. It could have been that, shortly, at least within the past year, Kennedy had visited Charlotte. And prior to his leaving, his motorcade drove on Tryon Street and eventually Wilkinson Blvd on the way to the airport. During the whole drive of the motorcade, Kennedy was sitting on the back of a convertible waving to everyone. I think it was Steve Cabaniss and I had parked ourselves on Wilkinson near the airport. When Kennedy rode buy waving, he and I made eye contact for a short time, and I have never forgotten that moment. I watched TV for the whole time right up to seeing Ruby shooting Oswald. Okay, sorry for my memories being so lengthy, but please weigh in, and share your memories.
