Theres no title for this wonderful sharing by Matthew Zachary Liu. Thus we will like to help to create one on behalf of Mr Liu! A Beautiful Heart Am I not pretty enough?” one of the eight-year-old sulked as she noticed her other friend getting more attention.. Beauty. Or “lack thereof. That inevitable insecurity. No one is ever born perfect. Secretly, we all wish we’re taller, slimmer, prettier, have bigger eyes, have straighter teeth, etc. We look at those models splashed across glossy pages and instagram feed and compare ourselves with them (or our better looking peers), making us feel inwardly inadequate and ashamed of the way we look. Blame the media for setting the stereotypical benchmark. We now define all outward and superficial aspects as a mark of beauty. Fortunately or unfortunately for most of us.. we’re decent looking at best. Wed like to be in the category of good looking though because no matter how one may try to argue, its still more a blessing than a curse to be beautiful. Good looking people always enjoy the perks in life. It’s a fact. Often, they are more popular, someone every other person would love to be around with, often they have things their way, etc. An eight-year-old is beginning to realise this. And she was a little upset. “Everyone is special in their own unique ways,” I began.. but caught myself midway through that old cliche. “Close your eyes,” I told her. Now, if someone came up to you asking for help, would you help them?” “No,” she said “because i’m not supposed to talk to strangers”. I couldn’t help but laugh.. i mean, it was a valid point. “Okay then imagine i’m your friend but i’m not the most popular or good looking person in class, everyone else don’t really like me or want to talk to me.. but I need your help with something.. will you help me?” “Of course!” When I asked her why, her answer was so simple but it struck home, “because you’re my friend and you need my help so of course i’ll help you!” “You still want to know if you’re pretty enough?”. She nodded. “I think you’re really precious. When I asked if you’d help me, you didn’t judge whether I was popular or good looking, you chose to help me because you want to. Being a beautiful person is not about how your face looks or how popular you are but how much your heart cares. So next time if you ever feel like you’re not pretty enough compared to other people, just close your eyes and listen to your heart.. because you already have a very genuine and sincere heart and that makes you so precious. Always remember that,”. Her face lit up.. .. and then a minute later, she came up to me again, still with a smile on her face but a new curious look.. “What does genuine and sincere mean?” Sigh.
