In the Lampasas Dispatch Record today: LCHEC slates fall allied health courses The Lampasas County Higher Education Center is registering for its fall allied health programs. Payment plans are offered, and scholarships are available for those who need financial assistance. Courses include: • Clinical Medical Assistant: The CMA program trains students in the skills necessary for employment in any modern medical facility. Students will become proficient in a variety of clinical and laboratory procedures and many administrative roles. CMAs perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep physician, podiatry, chiropractic and other health practitioner officers running smoothly. Students will study medical terminology, pharmacology, basic EKG, phlebotomy and medical billing. Program graduates may find employment in clinics, hospitals and laboratories where both administrative and technician skills are required. Classes are Sept. 26 to Dec. 20, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The $2,500 cost covers tuition, textbook, supplies and National Healthcareer Association certification exam. • Phlebotomy: This course provides phlebotomy instruction so that students have a working knowledge of collecting blood while emphasizing patient safety, quality assurance, and universal and standard precautions. Phlebotomy techs may work in hospitals, labs, clinics, doctors’ offices, or institutional facilities. Classes are Sept. 30 to Nov. 20, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Course cost is $1,200 for tuition, textbook, supplies and National Healthcareer Association certification exam. • Nurse Aide: A nurse aide works closely with patients and residents, assisting with bathing, grooming and feeding. CNAs are responsible for basic care services such as checking patient vital signs, ambulation and activities of daily living. A certified nurse aide may work in nursing homes, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, doctors’ offices, home health agencies and independent living facilities. Classes are Oct. 13 to Nov. 20, Monday through Thursday, 5:15-9:30 p.m. Course cost is $895 for tuition, textbook and workbook and classroom supplies. • Electrocardiogram Technician: An EKG tech is a member of the healthcare team whose primary duty is the performance of electrocardiograms on patients. An electrocardiogram measures the electrical activity of the heart and can be used to diagnose a range of heart diseases. Duties of the EKG technician include setting up and administering EKGs and stress tests; preparing patients for Holter or ambulatory monitoring; editing and delivering final test results to physicians for analysis; scheduling appointments; and transcribing physicians’ interpretations. Classes are Oct. 13 to Dec. 8, Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The $1,200 cost covers tuition, textbook, a national certification exam and classroom supplies.
