They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42 What an incredible and exciting time in the early, formative years of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ! The apostle Peter, having been restored and renewed in power by Jesus before His ascension to heaven, has just added three thousand converts to the church, and subsequent verses tell us that all the believers were together (v.44), ridding themselves of the drag of their earthly possessions, meeting and eating together EVERY DAY, praising God with glad and sincere hearts (v.46). This is an overview of the church as it was at the beginning, and serves well as the backdrop of the verse that we share this morning. We are shown four elements here to which these new believers devoted themselves- and I suggest that all four are presented in the context of having equal weight by the writer: The apostles teaching. The fellowship (read the church). The breaking of bread (the fellowship of souls). Prayer. Think now of your own life, and of your own church in relation to the model that is presented here. Is your life devoted to the Way of the Lord Jesus Christ as presented in these four elements? Or is it yet limited by the tug of the world that seeks to make its own way? Is your church devoted solely to the purpose of adding daily to the number of believers? Or is it interested primarily in simply getting along with a wicked and fallen world? Hard questions, perhaps, but the Lordship of Jesus Christ over His church demands that they be asked- and answered! Sola Jesu!
