Thich Nhat Hanh asks, “Do you have the time to listen to yourself, your suffering, your difficulties, and your deepest desire?” When you’re grieving, it’s important to turn off the noise in your life so that you are able to hear your answers to the preceding question. The “noise” encountered as you walk through your day can be incessant. Some of it is self-imposed, for example, when you turn on the TV or the radio to keep you company. But, it also surrounds you everywhere you go. Banks, restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, bookstores – they all have background music playing, along with announcements blaring from loud speakers and television screens blinking news and advertisements. This chatter, which invades society’s subconscious, can be a detrimental factor in finding some quiet time to reflect and examine your life – the past, present and the future to come. It may be impossible to avoid all the noise in your life; however, attempt to set aside a pre-planned segment (no matter how short) each day for quiet and reflective thought.
