Thirteen years ago today I was at the airport waiting for my flight to Nashville for a radio and tv news directors conference, watching the TV monitors and trying to figure out what the hell had happened in NYC when all of sudden a big BOOM shook the airport, followed by another BOOM, and almost instantaneously a group of TGIFridays workers come running by yelling in Spanish that there was a bomb in the airport, and three black guys (I mention their color because its relevant later on in the story) started running after them, with one of them saying I dont know what she said but when the Spanish people start running you KNOW its bad! We all go outside and see smoke everywhere and thats when we realized the Pentagon had been hit (the airport is right across the street more or less), One of the black guys says to me, cmon be a doll and help us get back to DC, no taxi is gonna stop for us but they will for you. and I went out on the street and hailed a cab and we all hopped in. Downtown DC was utter chaos and it took me three hours to walk back to the radio station, where I then stayed until past midnight reporting on the air. I still have that boarding pass hat I never used that says September 11, 2001. Chills. RIP all who perished that day and hugs to those left behind, including Tanya Villanueva Tepper.
