This December 3rd is Giving Tuesday – We say that in complete confidence, even though we hadn’t heard of Giving Tuesday until Black Friday! Nonetheless, it’s apparently been happening for several years now, and looks like it’s going to become a tradition. As the name implies, Giving Tuesday is a day of giving back, and we’re hoping you’ll consider the Atlantic Center as a good destination for your charitable feeling. We want to take a minute to tell you why you should. If you see things at all like we do – and you probably do if you are reading this – you believe that the death penalty is in its final gasps, and it’s only a matter of time until it falls like a rotten tree. But how much time, and who’s going to push the tree down? Just a few weeks ago we had two capital trials going on in the Criminal Justice Center in Philadelphia – this is more than the state of Virginia generally has in a year. Pennsylvania is the only truly active death penalty state in the entire Northeast, and there is no reason to think that prosecutors across the state are going to stop seeking death anytime soon. So someone has to continue to train the lawyers, focus the public’s attention, point out the flaws in the horrific and unfair system that we have now. Someone has to continue to push on that rotten tree. The Atlantic Center for Capital Representation has been that “someone” for more than three years now. We hope that with your support we won’t have to do it that much longer.
