This afternoon, I received the news that Monitor has closed its investigation into the Royal Berkshire Hospital. I have had detailed discussions with Monitor over the past 6 weeks in person and on the telephone and I am reassured that today’s decision is absolutely the right one. The Royal Berkshire Hospital is getting to grips with some of the big challenges it faces and it does not require enforcement action and fines to do so. I am pleased that Monitor has been a catalyst to making sure that the right decisions are made so that substantial progress is made and quickly. Monitor has assured me that it will be watching the RBH’s progress closely on A&E, finances and management in the weeks and months ahead and I will continue to keep a very close eye on developments. The management and staff of the RBH deserve support and recognition for the hard work they are putting in to turnaround some extremely challenging problems. But there is still a lot more to do and no-one is complacent. Monitor is the Governments sector regulator for health services in England. Its job is to protect and promote the interests of patients by ensuring that the whole sector works for their benefit. In August 2013 Monitor launched an investigation into Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust following breaches of its A&E four hour waiting time target.
