This country has made me re-evaluate and greatly alter my way of speaking and writing English (a language that Ive been learning since I was 3 years old) !! I am listing down a few adjustments that I can think of : - Capsicum -> Bell-pepper - Pin Code -> Zip/Postal code - Can I keep it -> Can I have it - Brinjal - Eggplant (this is one of the more strange ones) - Petrol - Gas - Petrol Pump - Gas Station - Note (as in currency note) - Bill - Bill (as in restaurant bill) - Check - Chai - Chai Tea (and here I was, thinking that Chai is the Hindi word for Tea...I though Chai-patti means Tea-leaves...poor me) - Tomato Sauce - Tomato Ketchup (this one was based on my preference of sorts because back home everybody else still says tomato ketchup, I was the ignorant one because somehow I got by every time saying sauce) - Dickie - Trunk - Paper Napkin - Tissue (this was personal preference again) - Spoon/Knife/Fork - Silverware (pardon my ignorance again) - Learning the NATO phonetics for my name or for anything else that I need to spell out while talking to someone on the phone. I still cant make people spell/say my name correctly in one go - When at a restaurant, you may not get a glass of water if you dont ask for it, so if the server asks you What would you like to drink? and you say anything but water....you may not get your glass of water at all....(strange again) - No one ever uses the word Talkies for a movie theater (the word is quite common back home) - Number Plate (for my car) - License Plate - Cheque - Check - Pulses - Lentils - The term Asians doesnt include myself.....I am an Indian (not that Im not proud of being identified like that but geographically...I am an Asian too...aint I) - Pajamas/Lowers - Long Johns/god knows what (pajama hamesha sirf pajama nahin hota....yaha pe wo poora nightsuit hota hai) - I dont think anybody uses the term nightsuit..:P :D - Business Casual Wear means a shirt and a pair of trousers and Business Formal Wear means a suit (I always thought business casuals only include a polo neck and a pair of denims) - Dust Bin - Trash Can/Waste Basket - I dont know if anybody uses the term biscuit - This one is specific to Starbucks.....a Tall drink is not really tall...its rather short - Gram - Chickpea/Garbanzo beans - Slippers - Flip-Flops - You get billed for your phone/electricity usage but at a restaurant you have to pay a check These are just the ones that I can remember off the top of my head...there are many more I am sure !!
