This envelope is for sale on eBay today, with a direct link to Sebewaing AND the the local Millerwise Families. Its an envelope to a Saginaw company from The Sebewaing Blade, mailed with a 2c stamp at 9 a.m. on July 16, 1923. So, Herman Millerwise was publisher then, and he likely typed this. It was postmarked in Sebewaing at 9 a.m., and then went out via train in a Post Office bag to Saginaw. It was received by the Saginaw Post Office and then delivered to the American Cash Register Co., no address, no Zip Code (not invented yet) but you know it got there, perhaps later that day. Certainly on the next day for sure. You see, there was no direct highway out of Sebewaing then (the only thing that went through Quanicassee then was the Detroit, Bay City & Western Railroad.) If you DID have a car or truck, you drove south to Unionville, and further south, then west toward Vassar and later Saginaw. Since cars had only been around about 20 years, there was no big need for roads... yet. There were six trains a day into and out of Sebewaing, so thats how folks (and mail) got to the big city from our little town. How times have changed... An interesting side note to me is that the DBC&W rail line bridge was washed out about 1925 in a storm, and the railroad stopped using that part of the tracks. It went out of business years later. But that rail bed became the state highway we know as M-25 now, so our highway to Bay City and Saginaw started as a railroad line.
