This happened yesterday... Today I went for a manicure and recognized the older woman who sat next to me. I did a double take and realized it was indeed Candice Bergen, the famous actress best known for her role as single working mom, Murphy Brown. Candice Bergen was always an actress I admired. She was a working mom, strong, and vocally pro-women. Today she looked frail, having recovered from a 2006 stroke, as I later read. But here was what I was most struck by - it was the man by her side, her husband. He came in and out of the salon to visit during her manicure and pedicure. He updated her on their plans for that night after he made a phone call outside and then he ran across the street to put their name in at the restaurant for lunch so that a table would be waiting when she was finished. When CB finished at the nail salon, she went across the street and I watched, marveling at how life had thrown this once super strong woman a huge curve ball. And then I watched as her husband lit up as she crossed the street towards him, how he had his hands on her shoulders and then took her face in his hands as he kissed her on the lips. They were in love and they were partners. And I couldnt stop thinking about our journeys through life and how at some point we might need the partner by our side to care for us through lifes unexpected turns. I was startled by my own tears. Murphy Brown had chosen well. Just as we would have expected.
