This happens to women here in the metro every day. Ive - TopicsExpress

This happens to women here in the metro every day. Ive complained about this to some people, and Ive stopped when they told me that Im being paid a compliment (as if Im asking for any), mayabang (Im not boasting, Im expressing my fear), and worse, buti nga sayo (so if I get violated in anyway, it is my fault even if I am as clothed as a nun?). These are real responses from real people: once, my arm was held in a tight grip by two drunkards - outside a night club I was passing through on the way home from my nearby dermatologist. They told me I needed a good time and the nightclubs guards jumped in to intervene. When I told people at my former workplace about this traumatic experience, I heard some snickers and whispers of buti nga from women, nonetheless. This, rape-shaming, and our attitude as women need to change. Shakira Sison says it the best in her latest Rappler article, Im not pretty for your pleasure: The way I fixed my hair or sculpted my brows is not so you can judge me according to your standards and put me on a scale of attractiveness or virtue. I have my own, and I hold my own value as a woman. No one deserves to feel threatened in their environment, men or women alike. Think about this before you judge, or wolf whistle. micacruz/stop-street-harassment-infographic/
