This is a 1909 photo of the new 1910 models of the Overland automobile on display at the Ernest O. Thompson Overland Automobile dealership in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Thompson was born in 1892, which means by the age of 17, he already had a car dealership. Not only that, Mr. Thompson fought in World War I and by the age of 26 was the youngest Lt. Colonel in the US Army. I think that is pretty amazing. Earnest O. Thompson was mayor of Amarillo from 1929 to 1932, when he was appointed to the Texas Railroad Commission . He was not born in Amarillo, but he moved here with his family at the age of ten and graduated from Amarillo High School before attending the Virginia Military Institute and later the University of Texas at Austin, where he got a law degree. He not only built Amarillos first multi-story office building, known as the Amarillo Building, but he also owned both the Amarillo Hotel and Herring Hotel in Amarillo. He also built the Panhandle Inn in Panhandle, Texas in 1924, and the Antro Hotel in Clarendon, Texas.
