This is a Holas Archives picture from brothers Dennis and Frank. Im posting it because it is kind of interesting. Notice the posts are up for Christmas tree guard rail but not the rails. This was put up after the tree was creamed on a Wednesday or Friday night race. My older brother wasnt allowed to go up to that race because it was on a school night. we usually went up the return road via Montana street which we lived on. It was the easiest and fastest way to get up directly into the pits, that is if we could cop a tailgate ride from one of you racers. That night he chose the direct route through the fields to the spectator side because he was late. I saw him sneaking off and told him if he didnt take me I would snitch him out. He had little choice and was furious. He basically drug me by my wrist and it was a hard transit because the fields were freshly plowed. He fell face first into the dirt and at the tip of his nose was a large pristine arrowhead that had been churned up by the farmers plow. Bonus. Right when we got to the track we saw the drag bike completely wipe out the Christmas tree. US 30 used a single bulb for staging and a flag start for the rest of the night. Even though Im not old enough to have been around when the flag starts were common place, I got to experience it after all. Pretty cool to see funny cars in the 70 get a flag start. Not sure when this guardrail was erected. Maybe the following season. This picture is obviously early in the season and thats when the farmers plow but Im not sure if the Wed. & Fri. night races started that early with a full compliment of funny cars...like a Coke race or 16+ field of cars, cause thats what was there that night.
