This is a fascinating story. As the father of three half-Hispanic kids I worry a lot about racism directed toward this new group of immigrants. In this particular story, I wonder if it is really about fitting in more than race. The name Joe Zamora is still plenty Hispanic sounding, just like Joe Rodriguez would be. But if he wants to go by Jose, perhaps it makes him seem less Americanized, for better or worse. This is reason why so many Asian-Americans go by Bill, or Robert when their actually name is is Xenwu. Perception is everything and even though we wish it werent so, it is a human reality-we like people the most who are the most like us.
