This is a film that every1 in this world CAN and SHOULD watch for it speaks a universal language of life, birth, death, religion, technology, people, wars and nature! - GSS Santosh Kumar Artist Page Thank you Hemanth Patnala & Ma Ha for referring this timeless (or timelapse) classic to me! :) Baraka (Ron Fricke 1992) Ron Frickes non-verbal, non-narrative documentary film is pure visual magnificence and a meditation on life in all its facets on our planet. The word is taken from Sufi and roughly translates as breath of life or blessing. Fricke had been the cinematographer for Godfrey Reggios Koyaanisqatsi, a similar type of documentary from 1982, and together they had made a gorgeous looking film with a clear pro-environment theme but Fricke pulled out all the stops for his own Baraca and delivered and even more visually arresting piece of work, shot in full 70mm Todd-AO, a format which had not been used since 1971. He filmed over a period of 14 months and shot footage at 152 different locations in 23 countries on six continents with frequent use of both slow motion and technically impressive time-lapse photography, for which he had special cameras built. The pro-environment theme and mans destructive force on the planet and itself are again present although presented in a slightly more oblique fashion than in Reggios film. The result is a completely astonishing and mesmerizing piece of true visual splendor, which obviously needs to be seen on the biggest screen possible. This is a film that simply everybody needs to see.
