This is a photo I took of Pete Staylor and Tan Nguyen in 2013. I believe Tan is rejoining us, but alas, Pete cannot. Pete has been involved in this Ride and Cause longer than I have. I have always looked up to him for both his wonderful spirit and tireless dedication to the Arthritis Foundation. The warm and joyous greeting that I received as I snapped this photo belie the pain that he endures in making this five hundred mile journey with us. You see his knees are arthritic, and though he never complained, those knees were giving out, even as he rode. This Friday Pete is having surgery. His recalcitrant knees are being replaced with artificial joints. I ask that all of you keep Pete in your prayers. I pray that God will guide the surgeons hands for a successful outcome, and I pray that He will comfort Pete through what must be a difficult series of days and weeks; perhaps months of recovery. Pete tells me that he is fully planning on tackling the CCC next year. Though he will be missed this year by many, I look forward to 2015 when he rides again on his newly minted bionic knees.
