This is a rational approach to a problem - what causes the northbound afternoon backup? This guy misses it but his approach is correct. Generally speaking, freeways get clogged when people cant get off them fast enough. Its not enough functioning exits that cause the problems on freeways; not a need for more through lanes. Remember northbound i-205 at SR500 before the Padden exit was added? The exit lane backs up and so people try to skip to the front of the backup and push in there. Of course, no one who has been sitting in the backup for the last 20 minutes is going to let them in and so they sit there in the next lane with their blinkers on. That then backs up the next lane. People approach in that lane and see a stopped vehicle up ahead with its blinker on and so they try to change lanes. Trouble is, they had to slow down to do it. Bad move. Now the next lane is backed up. Pretty soon, everyone is backed up and trying to get over into the car pool only lane. Instead of having three through lanes there are only one - the car pool lane and it is slowed to a crawl, also. Once traffic passes the Marine Drive exit it can begin to speed up. However, there are plenty of cars trying to enter right before the bridge and with cross-weaving going on as people who want to take SR14 are moving across also the far right lane of the bridge gets clogged up again immediately. So, you see, its not enough functioning exits that cause the problems on freeways; not a need for more through lanes. oregonlive/commuting/index.ssf/2014/08/portland_vancouver_interstate.html
