This is a repost from someone else that I found in a fb group... Will you take this challenge? I will!! This life is so isolating...Lets change that! 2015 COMMUNITY CHALLENGE: Im not complaining. I just think that because of my situation (I, too, have a severely disabled daughter), I see things the typical busy family may not see. We are having friends over for New Years Eve tomorrow evening. Its our second year having this particular family over. They have two disabled children. One has autism and one has a rare chromosomal condition. The parents are grateful beyond words that weve invited them a second year in a row. Theyve even cried about it. Heres why... Although they are awesome and funny... the typical couple youd want to spend time with, even share vacations with, their children arent. Their younger one is very physically involved and doesnt do much. Their older child has autism and can be quite a handful (do I dare say even annoying at times???). Anyway, over the years, due to their situation, theyve lost most of their friends and are hardly invited ANYWHERE. It breaks my heart. THE CHALLENGE... So, heres the challenge Id like all of my friends and family to consider taking... Invite a family of or a child with special needs to do something with you and/or yours. We assume that everyone has people in their lives to spend time with, to help out with the kids, to make them feel normal, even if for only a moment. The truth is, it happens less than you think. Now you may say I dont even have time for my own family! Thats exactly why this is called a challenge! And it doesnt even require a financial donation!!! Or, your children my scoff at the idea and may protest it because a particular child may be annoying or doesnt do anything or whatever. It doesnt have to be anything other than A few of us are meeting at the park for an hour after practice. Want to come? Heres the bottom line. It wont kill anyone to put a smile on their face and devote two hours of their time to brighten up a families day, week or even year! Its a sometimes unspoken sadness these families feel every time they hear someone talking about theirs or their kids play date, sleep over, run to the mall, meet up for coffee, pizza at the park, etc. This is a community challenge. Its to benefit everyone. Whether we are the recipients or givers, its about community and integration. Are you up for the challenge??? It could change lives. Maybe even yours. To let everyone know youve officially accepted the challenge, please repost on your own FB page.
