This is an alumnus of our exchange programs with a request. ______________________________________ To students living in or around Agadir and Laayoune, and or interested in cutting edge research and translation. My name is Philip Winkle, and am fortunate in life to say that I studied at Al Akhawayn University. This University and Country have been gracious to me in the past, that I am hoping to call upon its students to help conduct research for an honors thesis I am doing at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Morocco is the single largest exporter of fish in Africa, and the worlds leading producer of sardines. The development of this industry is pivotal to Moroccos future at the world stage, but off shore fisheries around the globe are famous for their failure to sustain their extraction. Furthermore, collective action is the foundation of Political Science and the complexity of fisheries in fact situates case studies on fisheries at the cutting edge of research. The EU Morocco fishing agreements that extend south raise questions about the collective action of small-scale fishermen. I intend to conduct a series of interviews with the indigenous fishermen and local officials in Agadir and Laayoune to understand how local fishermen collectively organize and monitor their industry. I am hoping to conduct these interviews for a maximum of three weeks. However, I need native speakers to help translate and interpret for me during these interviews. I am also a college student on a budget, and do I am desperately hoping to also find places to stay in both cities. I am absolutely willing to sleep on floors, and help out with housework! People willing to help out can also be acknowledged for their contribution to this thesis--if they wish. I hope to be in Morocco as early as December/January, but might need to begin travels around spring if it takes longer for authorities to approve this research. Please let me know if you are at all interested to help make this research possible, and feel free to contact me via email at [email protected]. Thank you so much for your interest and support!
