This is an interesting topic and one that I have pondered on for a long time. Especially after I saw the movie The Pianist and read the book Man Search For Meaning by Victor Frankl. We all live in communities. We have neighbours and they often seem to be kind people that care about others. When a war comes, all the men are called up and then some of your neighbours are easily conned into atrocities. Not only that. Let us say we are pulled into a war today that most South Africans dont agree with. The men are called up as conscripts. But somehow the men refuse to obey, they can be taken away by force, they can be locked up and so forth, but there are a lot of things that they cant be made to do if they really dont want to. They dont have to run, they can sit down. The dont need to shoot anybody or confront anybody. They dont need to obey a corporal....Why do we do this? Because we fear death? Because we fear authority? (false authority) Because we feel elevated? Because we want to feel accepted? So many questions and they are very important....Because if we really deep down evaluate mankind we will find that most of what we do is because we want to fit in and conform. The money system, the economy, the work culture, the acceptance of law and order all stands on a belief system and conformity...In corporates you have family men that are working as managers and sometimes managers can (and is expected to) violate human rights and act like monsters and get away with it...and tonight they go home and fit in with their families and try to be loving and kind parents...This question goes very deep.
