This is an older (and entertaining) video. Good as a refresher for what to teach our kids about police encounters. We should know 4 important phrases: 1) Am I free to go? (And then leave calmly. If allowed to go, sticking around constitutes voluntary detainment. if told no, you have the right to know why you are being detained. you can ask.); 2) I am remaining silent (you dont have to answer questions. Some states may require you to provide your name if asked. You also dont have to show an ID when asked. But if you are charged with something, you will be arrested and wont get a simple citation.); 3) I do not consent to you searching my stuff (But pat downs are legal. You dont have to show the contents of pockets or bags unless they find evidence of a weapon or have reasonable proof of a crime.); And,if needed: 4) I would like an attorney Most of all, stay calm.
